‘Autogenic’ means generated from within. The therapy is a form of deep relaxation, comparable to meditation, whereby a state of physical and mental rest is induced by autosuggestion.

Autogenic training is a relaxation technique developed by the German psychiatrist Johannes Schultz and first published in 1932. The technique involves the daily practice of sessions that last around 15 minutes, usually in the morning, at lunch time, and in the evening.

During each session, the practitioner will repeat a set of visualisations that induce a state of relaxation. Each session can be practiced in a position chosen amongst a set of recommended postures (e.g. lying down, sitting meditation, sitting like a rag doll, etc.).

The technique can be used to alleviate many stress-induced psychosomatic disorders. Schultz emphasized parallels to techniques in yoga and meditation. It is a method for influencing one’s autonomic nervous system. There are many parallels to progressive relaxation.

For more information on the benefits of autogenic training, visit the British Autogenic Society website.

In addition to being a general relaxation technique, autogenic therapy is used to help overcome psychological problems, as well as to control the symptoms of many physical disorders:

AIDS symptoms
Addictions
Aggression
Anxiety / panic attacks / phobias
Arthritis
Asthma
Bladder disorders
Cerebral palsy
Depression (mild/moderate)
Diabetes
Eating disorders
Eczema (atopic)
Epilepsy (frontal lobe)
Glaucoma
Headaches / migraines
Hypertension
Irritable bowel syndrome
Long term pain
Muscular pain
Sleep disorders / fatigue
Stress

In 2001, the Department of Psychology at the University of South Alabama studied 30 children between the ages of 7 and 18 years who suffered from migraines. The frequency of the migraines was reduced in all cases. In fact, six months after receiving autogenic training, 50% of them were completely free from symptoms.

In 1992, Dr Ann Bowden conducted a survey of 196 patients who had attended autogenic training at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. 144 said that their symptoms had improved, 49 said that they had stayed the same; 3 said they had got worse.

Autogenic training may not be recommended for those suffering from diabetes, hypoglycaemia or heart conditions; it is also not suitable for some people who have a history of psychiatric problems. You are advised to consult your GP first.

Autogenic Training

Contemplative Prayer

“Practicing the Presence of God”

and more.

Graham has taught groups in the UK and the States on topics as diverse as stress-management, meditation, Lectio Divina, Quaker spirituality and the Power of Relaxation.

Whether you are looking for help on how to apply mindfulness-based stress reduction on a day-to-day basis, improve your success with autogenics, or simply learn to live in the here and now, you can find practical help at Forward Therapy, Northampton.

We can provide one-to-one sessions, or group lessons, depending on your needs. Sessions can be arranged at times to suit the group or individual learning. Appointments can be scheduled during the day or evening, as convenient.

Sessions can be accessed at The Abington Clinic, Northampton or via home visits.

The lessons you can learn from the spiritual practices of others can be applied to suit your own life and beliefs. You do not have to become a Buddhist to benefit from mindfulness, any more than you have to become a Christian to appreciate the power of “Practicing the Presence”. However, both practices will have a dynamic effect on your day-to-day living.

There is a reason that so many people – and so many different spiritual traditions – have developed practices based on relaxation, quietness and being aware of the present moment. You are welcome to learn these lessons in whatever way suits your life and beliefs:

I’ve been pretty busy recently developing our hypnotherapy training package, for therapists and hypnotists in Northampton.

As always, the focus is on therapy and personal development, rather then simple entertainment. The theme of the training course that we are currently developing is Therapeutic Inductions.

If you’ve ever received hypnosis, or even if you are a hypnotherapist, you’ll recognise the familiar structure of: Induction, Deepener, Therapy, Wake-up. The usual tension felt by therapists is between making sure that are “under” enough during the induction and deepening and then getting to the therapy where the real magic happens. The tension is that the therapist wants to focus on the therapy, to see people change, but ends up focusing upon the induction, because it is felt that if he/she doesn’t do that part properly then none of the rest of it will work.

It is hoped that our training will be incredibly useful for therapists, in helping them move beyond this tension and to focus on the change taking place in their clients, rather than on their own performance. Therapeutic Inductions enable a hypnotherapist to move away from the four-step process above, towards an understanding of inductions as setting the whole theme of – and often lasting the entire length of – a hypnotherapy session.

Obviously, this involves learning conversational hypnosis skills, but there’s far more involved than that. The last person I introduced these ideas to quickly realised that he now had the ability to create countless numbers of inductions, from practically any conversation. The great thing about that was that it gave him an endless number of ways to approach any problem.

As you can see, this is powerful stuff! So, if you are looking for hypnosis training in Northampton, or simply want to learn a new way to structure your therapy sessions, contact us to be added to the mailing list.

PSTEC is a new and remarkably effective therapy technique that is completely unique. PSTEC offers fast, powerful, freedom from unwanted emotions. You’ve got to try to believe it!

What is PSTEC?

PSTEC is Percussive Suggestion Technique. It is a unique audio system which can be played to create a resolution for almost any problem related to unwanted emotions or feelings.

At the most basic level, PSTEC is a tap-along audio which can be used with the help of a therapist trained in PSTEC.

Percussive Suggestion Technique is an exciting therapy designed to neutralize any unwanted feelings of any kind in the most powerful, efficient and permanent way possible.

Does it really work?

Absolutely!

PSTEC is helpful in resolving issues of depression, anxiety, fears and phobias, obsessions, stress, anger and resentment, relationship issues, confidence, eating disorders, addictions and more!

The results that have been reported while using PSTEC have been quite amazing and can often achieve in minutes what takes other therapies a number of weeks!

Can I do it on my own?

Of course!

In fact, a basic 11-minute audio track is available on the official PSTEC website. However, for more complex issues, you might find it helpful to make use of a trained PSTEC therapist. If you live in Northampton, or Northamptonshire, you can discover the benefits of PSTEC by booking a session with Graham.

How can I book a PSTEC therapy session?

Contact us to book a session, or to find out about using PSTEC alongside other therapies, such as Hypnotherapy or NLP.

Do you make Home visits?

Yes. As with hypnotherapy and the other treatments we offer at Forward Therapy, if you are unable to make it to our clinic, we will endeavour to provide home appointments. Please see our fees page for more details.

The Hypnotherapy Directory provides an invaluable service to anyone looking for a qualified and competent hypnotherapist in their area. And we are delighted to be included!

The Hypnotherapy Directory team is passionate about increasing awareness of the positive benefits hypnotherapy can achieve. They are the same people behind the Counselling Directory and have seen and experienced first hand how important support for emotional issues can be.

Misconceptions about hypnotherapy can prevent individuals benefiting from the positive changes it could have. So, the Hypnotherapy Directory seeks to challenge all misconceptions, ensure the public is aware of the positive changes it can bring, and provide information, advice and support.

The Hypnotherapy Directory lists full profiles of hypnotherapists, detailing the different types of hypnotherapy offered, the fees they charge and their background information. That means that you can check out my credentials, training and certification! Only fully accredited and insured hypnotherapists are included within the directory, meaning that it provides valuable peace of mind to those seeking help.

People searching for a hypnotherapist may not know much about how or why it works, or what problems hypnotherapy can help with. Therefore the more information available on hypnotherapists profiles, the more individuals seeking help will understand about the treatment, and the more likely they’ll be to try hypnotherapy.

The directory currently aims to be the leading directory for hypnotherapy advice and information, connecting those seeking support with the largest network of hypnotherapists in the UK. They continually develop Hypnotherapy Directory around feedback from both the hypnotherapists listed on it, and those searching for a hypnotherapy.

All information displayed on a Hypnotherapy Directory profile is provided exclusively by
the Hypnotherapist. When you see the Hypnotherapy Directory Policy Approved seal, it means Hypnotherapy Directory has verified the following:

Valid insurance that covers them to practice Hypnotherapy

Northampton has a new Hypnotherapy Practice, offered by Graham Old, alongisde a host of complimentary therapies.

Based at the Abington Health Complex, Graham describes his hypnotherapy as “Compassionate, Contemporary and Client-centered.” He has trained with some of the best hypnotists and hypnotherapists in the world and says that he is looking forward to helping people discover that the changes they want to make in their life can be just around the corner.

Hypnosis uses a completely natural state of mind, similar to daydreaming or what Athletes call “the zone”. In that frame of mind, it is said that the power of the human mind can be accessed to enable you to quit smoking, lose weight, conquer phobias, build self esteem and increase motivation.

Graham Old calls his style of hypnotherapy “Forward Therapy”, saying that it is focused on helping people look and move forward, rather than delve into their past.

“I believe that it is more helpful to focus on where you want to go and the things you want to achieve, rather than dig-up the past or focus solely on the problems you’re facing. What’s the benefit in simply repeating what isn’t working for you, when you could just as easily look at the changes you want to make and how to begin working them out.

“I would much rather help people focus on their ‘preferred future’, than continually drag-up past mistakes, failures or traumas. When necessary, we can use hypnotherapy to help someone explore the past from a safe and comfortable distance, but we always do so to help them gain the momentum and resources to move forward.”

Graham practices from the Abington Clinic, which is part of the prestigious Abington Health Complex. From there, he sees clients from Northampton, Bedford, Buckinghamshire, Corby, Daventry, Earls Barton, Higham Ferrers, Kettering, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugby, Rushden, Wellingborough and all over Northamptonshire.

The Abington Clinic was opened by Sharon Davies, Olympic Medallist, in 1996. The Health Complex site incorporates the Abington Medical Centre, Pharmacy, Dental Clinic and Optician. There is ample, secure and free on site car parking and they have excellent disabled access to the modern purpose-built facility.

It’s well-known that hypnotherapy is a proven way to lose weight and quit smoking. So, what better way to treat yourself to a quick and effective treatment that could literally change your life?

A recent report, conducted at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and the University of California-San Francisco, found Hypnosis to be particularly helpful for would-be quitters who reported a history of depression. Statistics show that hypnotherapy is twice as powerful as other methods methods – like nicotine gum or patches – and 10 times more effective than trying to quit on your own!

Ben Affleck recently confessed that he had followed in Matt Damon’s shoes in seeking hypnotherapy to quit smoking. Affleck recalls, “You sit in, like, a Barker lounger (chair) and he (hypnotist) sips water and just talks to you for an hour, and explains how nicotine is poison.

“All of a sudden, you thought’ ‘This is asinine that I’ve been doing this to myself for all these years.’ “My last cigarette was on November 10th, 2005…I feel a huge difference in my health now that I don’t smoke. I feel like I’m in better shape than I was five years ago.”

Our Quit Smoking treatment takes from 1-3 sessions, with many clients conquering their habit in just 1 visit. So, what have you got to lose?

It is a little known fact that hypnosis is very effective in relieving and controlling pain. In fact, it is so effective that the use of hypnosis to manage pain must be approached with extreme caution.

It is usually unadvisable to treat pain unless the cause of that pain is already known and has been diagnosed by a medical practitioner. Pain is sometimes a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, for example, a persistent headache could be a symptom of a brain tumour. If the hypnotherapist were to treat the headache in this example, before the root cause of the pain was known, then this could well lead to the brain tumour not being diagnosed for longer. However, if the patient had already been to their doctor and more serious causes of the headaches had been eliminated, then it would be fine for the hypnotherapist to proceed.

Pain should never be treated for its own sake, but if the underlying cause is known and your doctor gives permission, hypnosis can be very effective in relieving pain.

In fact, according to the Guardian Newspaper, Doctors are being encouraged to use hypnosis alongside, or even instead of, general anaesthetics during some operations.

Professor David Spiegel, of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Stanford University in the US, has called upon the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to add hypnotherapy to its list of approved therapeutic techniques for the treatment of conditions ranging from allergies and high blood pressure to the pain associated with bone marrow transplantation, cancer treatment and anaesthesia for liver biopsy. (The NICE has already approved the technique for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.)

“It is time for hypnosis to work its way into the mainstream of British medicine… There is solid science behind what sounds like mysticism and we need to get that message across to the bodies that influence this area. Hypnosis has no negative side-effects. It makes operations quicker, as the patient is able to talk to the surgeon as the operation proceeds, and it is cheaper than conventional pain relief. Since it does not interfere with the workings of the body, the patient recovers faster, too.

“It is also extremely powerful as a means of pain relief.”

The following account of someone who had some bone in the base of the thumb removed and some joints fused together, without any anaesthetic, should silence even the most sceptical readers:

A hypnotherapist had an 83-minute operation on his arm with no anaesthetic.

At one point, Alex Lenkei even heard the surgeon say: “Can I have the saw, please?”

Because he had put himself into a hypnotic trance, however, he said he felt no pain as the doctors chiselled out a walnut-sized chunk of bone from his wrist.

Mr Lenkei, 61, had the operation to treat his painful osteoarthritis. He said: “The results have been amazing. I feel ace.”

…The hypnotherapist amazed doctors by asking how things were going halfway through the surgery, at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex on Wednesday.

…Surgeon David Llewellyn-Clark said the operation went well and Mr Lenkei showed no reaction during the surgery. He added: “If he had been grinning and bearing it we would have known – but his heart rate and breathing remained constant throughout.

…Mr Lenkei, who is a registered hypnotherapist, has been practising the technique since he was 16. In 1996 he was hypnotised by a colleague before a 30-minute hernia operation.

Anaesthetist Richard Venn said the surgery would usually be carried out under general anaesthetic.

Dr Leon Gevertz, of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis, said that heart operations had been carried out under hypnosis.

Studies found that the practice relaxes the patient and can alter the perception of pain or increase the pain threshold.

Hypnotherapy has proved wonderfully helpful in dealing with psychosomatic sexual problems-impotence, frigidity, etc.-and in enhancing self-esteem and confidence where necessary. The development of a positive self-image is always an important factor in adjusting to the needs and desires of partners and achieving the ultimate in relationship security.

Are you in a long-term relationship that could use a lift? Whether it’s parent-child tension, marriage difficulties of work-place conflict, hypnotherapy can help you improve your relationships. It can even help you find success in new relationships!

Occasionally in our lives we can find that our relationships don’t always run true to course. There are many ways in which relationship problems can arise, some examples are;

* relationship issues within marriage
* overcoming problems in a long distance relationship
* friends or colleagues who have had a difference of opinion find they are unable to approach one another to make amends
* disharmony can arise in families with teenagers putting a strain on families
* people may have difficulty in forming new relationships, particularly when they are finding it hard to ‘move on’ from a previous break up
* Fears and problems associated with dating

Often it can be difficult to ask for relationship advice. Whether you are looking to deal with relationship problems or are interested in building successful new relationships, hypnotherapy can help in many ways.

Hypnosis can also help couples facing sexual difficulties. Studies in the late 1990s showed a 75% to 80% improvement rate using hypnosis as a treatment for erectile dsyfunction patients whose impotence was not linked to physical causes. If you or a loved one suffer from premature ejaculation, hypnosis, relaxation and counselling can help.

Through the use of hypnosis, perceptions can be reframed to enable healing of damaged relationships or stabilisation of basically positive and healthy relationships. Hypnosis can allow you to re-appraise key events, to look at situations from a completely different perspective and to gain an appreciation for another’s position. You can recapture lost feelings of love, friendship, romance and commitment, allowing healing to occur in the here and now.

Most importantly of all, hypnosis can help you relate to yourself in healthier and more fulfilling ways. And as you know, how you relate to yourself is the key to how successfully you relate to others.
