Northampton has a new Hypnotherapy Practice in the shape of Graham Old and Forward Therapy.

Based at the Abington Health Complex, Graham describes his hypnotherapy as “Compassionate, Contemporary and Client-centered.” He has trained with some of the best hypnotists and hypnotherapists in the world and says that he is looking forward to helping people discover that the changes they want to make in their life can be just around the corner.

Hypnosis uses a completely natural state of mind, similar to daydreaming or what Athletes call “the zone”. In that frame of mind, it is said that the power of the human mind can be accessed to enable you to quit smoking, lose weight, conquer phobias, build self esteem and increase motivation.

Graham Old calls his style of hypnotherapy “Forward Therapy”, saying that it is focused on helping people look and move forward, rather than delve into their past.

“I believe that it is more helpful to focus on where you want to go and the things you want to achieve, rather than dig-up the past or focus solely on the problems you’re facing. What’s the benefit in simply repeating what isn’t working for you, when you could just as easily look at the changes you want to make and how to begin working them out.

“I would much rather help people focus on their ‘preferred future’, than continually drag-up past mistakes, failures or traumas. When necessary, we can use hypnotherapy to help someone explore the past from a safe and comfortable distance, but we always do so to help them gain the momentum and resources to move forward.”

Graham practices from the Abington Clinic, which is part of the prestigious Abington Health Complex. From there, he sees clients from Northampton, Bedford, Buckinghamshire, Corby, Daventry, Earls Barton, Higham Ferrers, Kettering, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugby, Rushden, Wellingborough and all over Northamptonshire.

The Abington Clinic was opened by Sharon Davies, Olympic Medallist, in 1996. The Health Complex site incorporates the Abington Medical Centre, Pharmacy, Dental Clinic and Optician. There is ample, secure and free on site car parking and they have excellent disabled access to the modern purpose-built facility.

It’s well-known that hypnotherapy is a proven way to lose weight and quit smoking. So, what better way to treat yourself to a quick and effective treatment that could literally change your life?

A recent report, conducted at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and the University of California-San Francisco, found Hypnosis to be particularly helpful for would-be quitters who reported a history of depression. Statistics show that hypnotherapy is twice as powerful as other methods methods – like nicotine gum or patches – and 10 times more effective than trying to quit on your own!

Ben Affleck recently confessed that he had followed in Matt Damon’s shoes in seeking hypnotherapy to quit smoking. Affleck recalls, “You sit in, like, a Barker lounger (chair) and he (hypnotist) sips water and just talks to you for an hour, and explains how nicotine is poison.

“All of a sudden, you thought’ ‘This is asinine that I’ve been doing this to myself for all these years.’ “My last cigarette was on November 10th, 2005…I feel a huge difference in my health now that I don’t smoke. I feel like I’m in better shape than I was five years ago.”

Our Quit Smoking treatment takes from 1-3 sessions, with many clients conquering their habit in just 1 visit. So, what have you got to lose?

It is a little known fact that hypnosis is very effective in relieving and controlling pain. In fact, it is so effective that the use of hypnosis to manage pain must be approached with extreme caution.

It is usually unadvisable to treat pain unless the cause of that pain is already known and has been diagnosed by a medical practitioner. Pain is sometimes a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, for example, a persistent headache could be a symptom of a brain tumour. If the hypnotherapist were to treat the headache in this example, before the root cause of the pain was known, then this could well lead to the brain tumour not being diagnosed for longer. However, if the patient had already been to their doctor and more serious causes of the headaches had been eliminated, then it would be fine for the hypnotherapist to proceed.

Pain should never be treated for its own sake, but if the underlying cause is known and your doctor gives permission, hypnosis can be very effective in relieving pain.

In fact, according to the Guardian Newspaper, Doctors are being encouraged to use hypnosis alongside, or even instead of, general anaesthetics during some operations.

Professor David Spiegel, of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Stanford University in the US, has called upon the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to add hypnotherapy to its list of approved therapeutic techniques for the treatment of conditions ranging from allergies and high blood pressure to the pain associated with bone marrow transplantation, cancer treatment and anaesthesia for liver biopsy. (The NICE has already approved the technique for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.)

“It is time for hypnosis to work its way into the mainstream of British medicine… There is solid science behind what sounds like mysticism and we need to get that message across to the bodies that influence this area. Hypnosis has no negative side-effects. It makes operations quicker, as the patient is able to talk to the surgeon as the operation proceeds, and it is cheaper than conventional pain relief. Since it does not interfere with the workings of the body, the patient recovers faster, too.

“It is also extremely powerful as a means of pain relief.”

The following account of someone who had some bone in the base of the thumb removed and some joints fused together, without any anaesthetic, should silence even the most sceptical readers:

A hypnotherapist had an 83-minute operation on his arm with no anaesthetic.

At one point, Alex Lenkei even heard the surgeon say: “Can I have the saw, please?”

Because he had put himself into a hypnotic trance, however, he said he felt no pain as the doctors chiselled out a walnut-sized chunk of bone from his wrist.

Mr Lenkei, 61, had the operation to treat his painful osteoarthritis. He said: “The results have been amazing. I feel ace.”

…The hypnotherapist amazed doctors by asking how things were going halfway through the surgery, at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex on Wednesday.

…Surgeon David Llewellyn-Clark said the operation went well and Mr Lenkei showed no reaction during the surgery. He added: “If he had been grinning and bearing it we would have known – but his heart rate and breathing remained constant throughout.

…Mr Lenkei, who is a registered hypnotherapist, has been practising the technique since he was 16. In 1996 he was hypnotised by a colleague before a 30-minute hernia operation.

Anaesthetist Richard Venn said the surgery would usually be carried out under general anaesthetic.

Dr Leon Gevertz, of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis, said that heart operations had been carried out under hypnosis.

Studies found that the practice relaxes the patient and can alter the perception of pain or increase the pain threshold.

Hypnotherapy has proved wonderfully helpful in dealing with psychosomatic sexual problems-impotence, frigidity, etc.-and in enhancing self-esteem and confidence where necessary. The development of a positive self-image is always an important factor in adjusting to the needs and desires of partners and achieving the ultimate in relationship security.

Are you in a long-term relationship that could use a lift? Whether it’s parent-child tension, marriage difficulties of work-place conflict, hypnotherapy can help you improve your relationships. It can even help you find success in new relationships!

Occasionally in our lives we can find that our relationships don’t always run true to course. There are many ways in which relationship problems can arise, some examples are;

* relationship issues within marriage
* overcoming problems in a long distance relationship
* friends or colleagues who have had a difference of opinion find they are unable to approach one another to make amends
* disharmony can arise in families with teenagers putting a strain on families
* people may have difficulty in forming new relationships, particularly when they are finding it hard to ‘move on’ from a previous break up
* Fears and problems associated with dating

Often it can be difficult to ask for relationship advice. Whether you are looking to deal with relationship problems or are interested in building successful new relationships, hypnotherapy can help in many ways.

Hypnosis can also help couples facing sexual difficulties. Studies in the late 1990s showed a 75% to 80% improvement rate using hypnosis as a treatment for erectile dsyfunction patients whose impotence was not linked to physical causes.If you or a loved one suffer from premature ejaculation, hypnosis, relaxation and counselling can help.

Through the use of hypnosis, perceptions can be reframed to enable healing of damaged relationships or stabilisation of basically positive and healthy relationships. Hypnosis can allow you to re-appraise key events, to look at situations from a completely different perspective and to gain an appreciation for another’s position. You can recapture lost feelings of love, friendship, romance and commitment, allowing healing to occur in the here and now.

Most importantly of all, hypnosis can help you relate to yourself in healthier and more fulfilling ways. And as you know, how you relate to yourself is the key to how successfully you relate to others.

We all know that a phobia – defined as an irrational or excessive fear – can develop in a matter of seconds.

All it takes is a dog to surprise you by running at you whilst barking, or struggling to regain your breath whilst swimming, and before you know it you’ve developed a fear of dogs, or water, or anything else that your subconscious mind develops to protect you.

Since hypnosis is the most direct way into the subconscious, it stands to reason that it can become the instrument of disarming the irrational fear. And, as a life-affecting fear like this can develop in seconds, then it should be no surprise that if we can access the subconscious mind then we can remove the phobia as quickly as it arose.

Many specific phobias can be traced back to specific triggering events which may have occurred at an early age and have set a subconscious response pattern. As such, most fears are learned. Some of these are useful, e.g., the fear of touching a hot saucepan. Other fears appear to not be useful; such fears are considered irrational. Strictly speaking, the term ‘phobias’ is reserved for such irrational fears.

Very often an unchecked phobia spreads to more and more situations. Thus the life of a phobic person becomes ever more constricted. Or a person might be phobic, for instance, of driving across a bridge. Then he becomes phobic of even looking at a photograph of a bridge, thence he avoids books with photographs of bridges and movies because there might be a bridge image, so he begins to avoid bookstores and movie houses. Then streets near bridges. Then highways because somewhere along their length they might include a bridge. And on and on.

There are hundreds of phobias. Here are a few:

* fear of animals (Zoophobia)
* fear of bees (Apiphobia)
* fear of being alone (Monophobia)
* fear of being buried alive (Taphophobia)
* fear of blood (Haemophobia)
* fear of bridges (Gephyrophobia)
* fear of clowns (Coulrophobia)
* fear of confined spaces (Claustrophobia)
* fear of the dark (Nyctophobia)
* fear of Dentists (Odontophobia)
* fear of disease (Pathophobia)
* fear of dogs (Cynophobia)
* fear of flying (Aviatophobia)
* fear of heights (Acrophobia)
* fear of insanity (Lyssophobia)
* fear of marriage (Gamophobia)
* fear of needles (Trypanophobia)
* fear of open spaces (Agoraphobia)
* fear of rats (Musophobia)
* fear of spiders (Arachnophobia)
* fear of vomiting (Emetophobia)
* fear of water (Aquaphobia)

Hypnotherapy is a proven method of removing fears and phobias. The method most often used is a variation of the Rewind Technique, which is effective at removing many phobias in one session.

We all know that life is full of situations that can cause stress. But did you know that 75% to 90% of all doctor’s office visits are for illnesses related to stress?

Stress has been linked to most health problems, including heart attacks and strokes. Being over-stressed can also lead to low work performance, sleep issues, absent-mindedness, decreased interest in life, addictions, and many other undesirable results.

Yet, it’s also known people who respond well to stress and know how to prevent unnecessary anxiety are typically “peak performers.”

Through the use of hypnotherapy, you will be enabled to manage stress and anxiety effectively. Benefits will include:

* Increased energy and focus
* Allowing you to deal effectively with authority, roles and limits
* Increase your tolerance to frustration during difficult circumstances
* Let you adapt to change and prosper from it
* Help you to develop a sense of belonging
* Let you show friendliness, care, and love
* Allow you to enjoy recreation
* Permit you to relax and sleep better
* Free your sense of humor and ability to laugh at yourself
* Let you demonstrate a reasonable sense of independence and self-reliance

Hypnosis for Stress teaches you how to relax and stay calm even under the most stressful conditions. You will learn to recognize the things that trigger your stress and this is powerful in helping you to manage the level of stress you feel may be necessary.

Through hypnosis, you will be guided through exercises that help you learn how to adapt to stressful situations, resolve existing anxieties, and create new ways of looking at the world. You are able to re-access positive states from times when you have felt calm, relaxed, confident and in control. These positive states can then be associated with the stressful event, which allows you to react more positively to it in future.

When necessary, Hypnosis and Coaching can also be used to help you to effectively explore the reasons behind why you react in certain ways in certain situations. Once you know how the stress is caused we can develop ways to change your reactions to it, help you build coping strategies and ways of either controlling, minimising or even avoiding your stressors.

You will find that hypnosis can trigger your natural relaxation response, causing wonderful waves of good hormones and feelings of tranquility to wash through your mind and body.

Imagine having relief on tap – something you could experience whenever you need it that would remove all the stress from your body and return the sparkle your mind!

You will find that the simple act of learning how to relax, through tool such as breathing techniques, positive thinking and assertiveness, can have a life-changing impact on you and your relationships.

You can read more about the benefits of using Hypnosis for Relaxation in this article from the Independent Newspaper: Relax your way to perfect health.

When smokers try to stop with other methods than hypnosis they suffer misery and depression caused by the feeling that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch. The beauty of hypnosis, and the way we use hypnosis in particular, is that it removes this feeling of deprivation. All that you have to do is sit back in a nice comfortable chair, and relax. It doesn't get much easier than that!

A number of studies indicate that hypnosis – when combined with a behavioral weight management program – contributes significantly to weight loss.

It’s not difficult to find someone struggling with their weight and then beating themselves up for failing to keep to the latest fad diet. The reason is normally obvious to anyone not trapped in the same old cycle – diets address the wrong area. The problem is not with what you put into your mouth. It’s what is going on in your mind that really counts!

People who are happy with their weight and keep to a healthy weight don’t actually need to try all that hard. They just do things a certain way. The formula for success is actually easy and it’s the same formula being used again and again. It’s actually all about developing healthy habits, which work at the sub-conscious level much removed from the determined efforts of someone attempting to stick to a diet.

The reason hypnosis is such a powerful tool for weight loss is it’s potential to help you build new healthy habits. This is ideal for easy, natural weight loss.

Hypnotherapy can help with weight loss and weight management in many ways

* Developing a new self image. See yourself in the future after losing weight and make that your desired future outcome.
* Learn to be more relaxed about weight loss and weight management. Stress is often a serious factor in bad diet and comfort eating.
* Positive thinking about weight and diet. Stop worrying about your weight and about weight loss and start looking forward to losing weight and achieving your goals.
* Create a self-fulfilling prophecy. In other words, start to feel better about yourself. This will help you to lose weight and, of course, losing weight will help you to feel even better about who you are and what you can achieve. The whole thing becomes a very positive cycle which goes round and round. Most people expect to have to lose weight in order to feel good about themselves. Interestingly, when you start to feel good about yourself, weight loss, health and happiness often follow.

People who hear of the success of hypnotherapy in treating weight-loss often find it difficult to believe. For example, we have had clients who lost 5 stone in one year and later described it as “easy”! The reason is that they did not have to battle day-in and day-out with sticking to a list of foods they had to avoid. Instead, they learnt to see themselves, their food and their eating in a completely different light.

And now you can too!

Hypnosis is a natural and healthy way of helping you bring lasting change into your life.

Just imagine looking back on yourself in 6 months time and seeing how delighted you feel to swiftly change those unwanted behaviours, conquer your fears and turn your life around.

It’s time to discover the new you!

There are a lot of misconceptions about what hypnosis is and how hypnotherapy works. However, rather than rely upon the stereotypes of movies or the antics of Stage Hypnotists, why not discover for yourself how effective and pleasant an experience it can be?

My name is Graham Old and I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist, offering a caring, calming and modern approach to hypnosis in Northampton and throughout Northamptonshire. I have used hypnosis to help people resolve their fears, sleep problems, anxieties and stress. You can also use my services to discover how effectively solution-focused hypnotherapy can help you quit smoking, control your drinking, overcome sleep problems, help with anger-management and increase your self-esteem.

I am based at the Abington Health Complex, Northampton, within easy reach Bedford, Buckinghamshire, Corby, Daventry, Earls Barton, Higham Ferrers, Kettering, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rushden and Wellingborough.

Hypnosis uses a completely natural state of mind, similar to daydreaming and what Athletes call “the zone”. In that frame of mind, the power of the human mind can be accessed to enable you to quit smoking, lose weight, overcome fears, phobias, anxiety, panic, eliminate negative habits and emotions, build self esteem, enhance performance, and much more.

At Forward Therapy, we can help you achieve a balance between your body and mind. You can then begin to live that happier, more satisfying and peaceful life that’s just around the corner.
